Trip Overview

The Lower Dolpo Trek is a remote journey into one of Nepal’s most isolated regions, known for its Tibetan culture, ancient monasteries, and spectacular natural beauty. Trekking over high passes like Numa La (5190m) and Baga La (5070m), this trek offers adventure seekers a blend of cultural immersion and pristine landscapes. The trek demands good fitness, altitude acclimatization, and mental resilience due to its challenging terrain and limited facilities.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu (1400m)

Arrive at Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport, where you will be warmly welcomed and transferred to your hotel. Spend the day relaxing or exploring the vibrant city. In the evening, attend a detailed trek briefing covering the itinerary, gear preparation, and safety guidelines. This session ensures everyone is well-prepared for the journey ahead and helps answer any questions.

Day 2: Flight from Kathmandu (1400m) to Nepalgunj (150m)

After breakfast, take a morning flight to Nepalgunj, the gateway to western Nepal and the starting point for flights into Dolpo. Upon arrival, relax at your hotel and check your trekking equipment. If time allows, explore the local market area to experience the diverse cultural vibe of this lowland town. Early preparation for your next-day flight to Juphal is essential.

Day 3: Flight from Nepalgunj (150m) to Juphal (2502m), Trek to Dunai (2850m)

Begin your adventure with an early flight from Nepalgunj to Juphal. From here, start trekking along the Thuli Bheri River towards Dunai village. The trail offers serene forested landscapes and views of Tibetan-style stone houses. This initial trekking day helps your body adapt to the altitude and prepares you for the tougher days ahead.

Day 4: Trek from Dunai (2850m) to Tarakot (2543m)

Trek downhill today through lush forests and alongside the river, absorbing the tranquility of this remote region. Tarakot is a small settlement with typical stone houses and fluttering prayer flags. The peaceful environment offers insight into the simple, traditional lifestyle of Lower Dolpo’s inhabitants.

Day 5: Trek from Tarakot (2543m) to Laini (3160m)

Today’s trail ascends steadily through forests and farmland, passing isolated villages. Laini sits in a beautiful location with sweeping mountain views. The atmosphere remains calm and remote, reinforcing the feeling of trekking in an untouched part of the Himalayas.

Day 6: Trek from Laini (3160m) to Nawarpani (3545m)

The trail climbs gradually into higher alpine terrain. You’ll trek through forests giving way to open meadows as you approach Nawarpani, a quiet settlement with stunning views of surrounding peaks. Temperatures begin to drop, so layering clothes is advised.

Day 7: Trek from Nawarpani (3545m) to Dho Tarap (4090m)

Trek today is strenuous with steep ascents leading to Dho Tarap, one of Lower Dolpo’s largest villages. Known for its monasteries and traditional stone architecture, Dho Tarap offers a chance to experience Tibetan Buddhist culture firsthand.

Day 8: Acclimatization Day in Dho Tarap (4090m)

Day 9: Trek from Dho Tarap (4090m) to Numa La Base Camp (4440m)

The trail climbs steadily through rugged, rocky terrain toward Numa La Base Camp. You will experience vast mountain panoramas and sparse vegetation typical of the high Himalayas. The base camp offers a good resting spot before crossing the high pass tomorrow.

Day 10: Trek from Numa La Base Camp (4440m) to Penung Tang (4465m) via Numa La Pass (5190m)

Cross the challenging Numa La Pass at 5190m, the trek’s highest point. The ascent is demanding but rewards with breathtaking panoramic views. After descending the pass, continue to Penung Tang village to rest and recover.

Day 11: Trek from Penung Tang (4465m) to Dajok Tang (4080m) via Baga La Pass (5070m)

Today involves crossing the Baga La Pass at 5070m, another strenuous climb with spectacular vistas. After descending the pass, reach Dajok Tang, a small settlement in a peaceful valley surrounded by mountains.

Day 12: Trek from Dajok Tang (4080m) to Ringmo (3600m)

Day 13: Trek from Ringmo (3600m) to Phoksundo Lake (3611m)

Today’s trek is easier, leading to the stunning Phoksundo Lake, famous for its turquoise waters and depth. Explore the lake shore and visit nearby villages while enjoying the peaceful ambiance inside Shey Phoksundo National Park.

Day 14: Trek from Phoksundo Lake (3611m) to Shyanta (2520m)

Descend gradually through forest trails and terraced farmland to Shyanta village. The environment becomes greener and more temperate as you leave the high alpine zones behind.

Day 15: Trek from Shyanta (2520m) to Juphal (2320m)

Continue descending through peaceful villages and farmland until you reach Juphal, your trek’s endpoint. Celebrate your accomplishment and prepare for the flight back to Nepalgunj and Kathmandu.

Day 16: Flight from Juphal (2320m) to Nepalgunj (150m), then Kathmandu (1400m)

Fly from Juphal to Nepalgunj, and connect to a flight back to Kathmandu. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel and relax after your long journey.

Day 17: Final Departure

Transfer to Tribhuvan International Airport for your departure flight, concluding your memorable Lower Dolpo adventure.
