Trip Overview
The Upper Mustang Trek is a captivating journey through Nepal’s remote Mustang region, often described as a hidden kingdom. Over 17 days, trekkers traverse arid desert-like valleys, ancient villages, and rugged mountain passes while immersed in Tibetan-influenced culture and breathtaking Himalayan scenery. Highlights include the walled city of Lo-Manthang, high desert passes, and spiritual monasteries. This trek offers a unique combination of adventure, cultural richness, and natural beauty, ideal for those seeking an off-the-beaten-path experience in a strikingly different Himalayan environment. Moderate altitude challenges require good fitness and acclimatization.

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu
Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, a representative will meet you and provide a private transfer to your hotel. After settling in, you can relax or explore some of Kathmandu’s cultural sites. In the evening, you will meet your trekking guide for a briefing on the Upper Mustang trek itinerary. This is also the opportunity to check and collect any missing gear needed for your adventure. The day is designed to help you acclimatize and prepare mentally for the exciting trek ahead.

Day 2: Drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara
After an early breakfast, you will board a private jeep/ Scorpio for a 6 to 7-hour journey to Pokhara. Along the way, enjoy scenic views of rivers such as Trishuli and Marsyangdi, surrounded by lush hills and mountain ranges. Pokhara Valley is famous for its beautiful lakes and panoramic Himalayan views including Annapurna and Machapuchare. Once you reach Pokhara and check into your hotel, you can explore the lakeside area, rent a boat on Fewa Lake, or unwind at local cafes before dinner.

Day 3: Flight from Pokhara to Jomsom, Trek to Kagbeni
A short 25-minute flight takes you from Pokhara to Jomsom, soaring over spectacular mountain scenery. Jomsom sits amidst barren hills and snowy peaks and serves as a gateway to Upper Mustang. The trek from Jomsom to Kagbeni follows the Kali Gandaki River through a semi-arid valley. Kagbeni is a former trading hub and houses a significant Buddhist monastery. The area offers a glimpse into the spiritual life of pilgrims traveling to Muktinath, enriching your trekking experience with cultural insight.

Day 4: Trek from Kagbeni to Chele
You’ll start early to avoid the afternoon winds common in Mustang. After submitting your trekking permit at Kagbeni checkpoint, follow the eastern bank of the Kali Gandaki River towards Chuksang, enjoying spectacular views of Mt. Nilgiri glowing in the morning light. Be prepared for windy, dusty conditions that might require sunglasses and a face mask. Along the route, you’ll pass unique red sandstone formations and reach Tangbe Village, known for its apple orchards and barley fields, before ascending to the ridge settlement of Chele, offering stunning landscapes.

Day 5: Trek from Chele to Syangboche
Today’s hike becomes more challenging with a steady climb of about 800 meters. You will ascend steep paths to the high Taklam La Pass (3625m), with breathtaking views of Tilicho Peak and other mountains. Crossing the pass leads you to Samar, a common resting spot for mule caravans. Descending through a large gorge, you pass Rangchyung Chorten adorned in bright colors and continue through juniper forests. After about three hours, you will reach Syangboche, a remote village near the well-known Ramchung Cave, marking a key point on your trek.

Day 6: Trek from Syangboche to Ghami
From Syangboche, ascend Yamada La Pass (3845m) through stark desert landscapes dotted with small villages. The climb offers sweeping views of the Kali Gandaki canyon and surrounding mountains. As you descend, the trail passes through traditional farming communities, poplar groves, and barley fields. Near Nyi Pass (4010m), the trail becomes steeper and more strenuous before descending gently to the tranquil village of Ghami, where you can rest amid peaceful alpine scenery and prepare for the next day’s adventure.

Day 7: Trek from Ghami to Charang
After breakfast, the trek continues through Mustang’s driest region. Cross the Ghami Khola river and ascend to a plateau featuring a 250-meter-long Mani wall, one of the longest in the area. Traverse varied terrain and cross a picturesque river before climbing to Tsarang La Pass (3870m). From there, descend towards Charang, an alpine village with stunning views of snow-capped peaks and rocky hills. Charang boasts a medieval fortress and a red gompa filled with remarkable sculptures, adding cultural richness to your trekking experience.

Day 8: Trek from Charang to Lo-Manthang
Today’s journey takes you to the historic walled town of Lo-Manthang, the final destination. Descend into the Charang Chu Canyon, then gradually climb through scenic landscapes with views of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, and other peaks. Pass landmarks such as Sungda Chorten and Lo Pass (3850m), where you’ll be treated to expansive mountain panoramas. Lo-Manthang was once the capital of the Mustang Kingdom and remains surrounded by ancient walls, inhabited by local communities preserving traditional Tibetan culture.

Day 9: Exploring Lo-Manthang
Take a day to acclimatize and explore Lo-Manthang’s rich cultural heritage. Located near the Tibetan border, this walled city was historically a vital trade center. You can visit important religious sites including Thubchen Monastery, Jampa Monastery, and a local museum. The town is famous for its Thangka paintings and impressive defensive walls. Visitor numbers are limited to protect its fragile environment and cultural assets. After sightseeing, relax at your accommodation and soak in the serene atmosphere of this unique Himalayan town.

Day 10: Trek from Lo-Manthang to Yara
Depart Lo-Manthang and cross Lo La Pass, enjoying panoramic views of Nilgiri, Annapurna, and Tilicho peaks. Descend through the rugged terrain to Dhi village on the Kali Gandaki River, where you will pause for lunch. Continue your ascent to Yara, a traditional mountain village with terraced fields and stone houses. Here, local women often sell handmade crafts, offering a chance to support the community. The peaceful setting provides a perfect place to rest and appreciate the natural beauty surrounding you.

Day 11: Trek from Yara to Tangge
Today’s trek involves alternating ascents and descents through the Dhechyang Khola valley and surrounding plateaus. Along the way, observe fascinating ammonite fossils embedded in the rocks. The final descent leads to Tangge village, tucked beneath towering granite cliffs and surrounded by dramatic scenery. Tangge features vibrant mani walls and chortens that highlight the area’s spiritual traditions. Day 12: Trek from Tangge to Chhusang
This is the longest trekking day, starting early to cover the distance comfortably. Trek through diverse landscapes including abandoned villages, jagged rock formations, and fertile fields. The route offers sweeping views of Himalayan giants like Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri. Pass through Pa village before ascending the Siyarko Tangk Danda ridge to Chhusang via Chhomnang. Along the way, you might visit a Himalayan salt mine, gaining insight into the region’s natural resources and traditional livelihoods as you prepare for the trek’s final stages.

Day 13: Trek from Chhusang to Muktinath

Day 14: Trek from Muktinath to Jomsom
Begin descending through charming Thakali villages including Ranipauwa and Jharkot. Visit Lupra, known for its Bonpo cave monastery and Lama Tuku Lama monastery overlooking the valley. The trail offers breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks like Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri. Continue along the Panda River valley before arriving in Jomsom, the district’s administrative center located by the Kali Gandaki River. This marks the end of your trekking adventure in Upper Mustang.

Day 15: Flight from Jomsom to Pokhara
Take an early morning flight back to Pokhara, flying over stunning Himalayan scenery. Upon arrival, enjoy free time to relax or explore the lakeside town. Popular attractions include Phewa Lake, the World Peace Stupa, and Devi’s Fall. Celebrate your successful trek with a peaceful evening by the lake or in one of Pokhara’s many cafes and restaurants.

Day 16: Drive from Pokhara to Kathmandu
Board a Jeepvfor the scenic 6-7 hour journey back to Kathmandu. The route follows the Marsyangdi and Trishuli Rivers, passing lively market towns like Damauli and Mugling. Enjoy spectacular views of hills and snow-capped mountains. Upon arrival, a representative will assist your transfer to your hotel where you can freshen up before spending your final evening exploring Kathmandu’s vibrant Thamel district.

Day 17: Final Departure
